I Dare You

Hunter and Peter had always been competitive, but their rivalry wasn’t born on the playing field—it lived in the small, ridiculous dares they threw at each other to pass the time in their cramped college dorm. It started harmlessly enough. One late night, fueled by caffeine and boredom, Hunter smirked across the room and said, “I dare you to sign up for Women’s Studies 204.”

Peter blinked. “Why would I—”

“Scared?” Hunter teased.

That was all it took.

Peter enrolled the next morning. But he wasn’t going to let Hunter have the last laugh. A week later, he leaned back in his chair and said casually, “Your turn. I dare you to buy satin panties. And wear them. All day.”

Hunter turned red but didn’t flinch. “Fine.”

From there, the dares escalated with a kind of reckless momentum neither had anticipated. A silk camisole day. A “who can wear the most convincing eyeliner” challenge. A contest over who could walk more confidently in soft pink house slippers.

By the time summer ended, both of them were in too deep to admit defeat.

So the final dare—mutually agreed upon, mutually ridiculous—was simple: *full outfit, head to toe, identical, and worn in public.* No backing out.

Which is how, on the day before classes began, Hunter and Peter found themselves standing in front of the mall entrance as a pair of mirror images: ruffled white blouses with oversized pink bows; fluffy pink skirts; white tights; soft pink slippers; matching crossbody purses. Their ears—soon to be pierced—were unadorned and waiting. Their hair, still their usual shaggy college style, would soon be trimmed into something “feminine and cute,” as Hunter put it.

Peter pulled open the door. “Last chance to chicken out?”

Hunter squared his shoulders, bow rustling. “Not a chance.”

They stepped inside together, earning double takes, stares, and a few smiles from passing shoppers. Neither slowed. The piercing studio was on the second floor. The salon was just across from it. Their reflections appeared side-by-side in every glass wall they passed—two young men trying not to laugh, not to blush, and definitely not to admit how oddly exhilarating it all felt.

By the time they reached the escalator, Peter nudged Hunter. “So… after this, what happens? Another dare?”

Hunter opened his mouth, but didn't say anything.

And the escalator reached the top.

They stepped off together, bows bouncing, slippers whispering against the floor, as they walked toward the piercing studio and whatever came next.
